Walgreens 101

One of my favorite stores! Why? Because I spend very little money there! I like to get my Walgreen’s coupon match ups from various websites like thekrazycouponlady.com, AFullCup.com, Hip2save.com, not always Grocery Smarts. But always check your ad to make sure the same promotions are going on in your area. Some sales and coupons are regional and won’t apply.

3 Ways to Save – In-ad Coupons, Instant Value Coupons (IVC), and Register Rewards (RR)

1.      In-Ad Coupons – What are In-Ad Coupons?
a.       These are store coupons that can be combined with a MC, and IVC. They can be found in their weekly ad.
b.      If you are buying multiple items the coupon only needs to be scanned once. Meaning, if you buy 5 of the items, the discount will be given to all 5 when the coupon is scanned once.
c.       Most in-ad coupons have a limit, however some stores aren’t strict with this rule.
d.      These coupons are reusable and in most cases you don’t need to cut them out and hand them over. Just show them the coupon right from the ad.
2.      IVC – What is an IVC
a.       These come in many forms.
                                                                          i.      Monthly Coupon Booklet located at the front of the store
ii.      Promotional Booklets found throughout the store and in the Pharmacy
iii.      Walgreen’s Children’s Coloring Book can be purchased for $.99
b.      They are Store Coupons that can be combined with a MC and In-Ad coupon.
c.       Only 1 needs to be scanned for multiple items purchased.
d.      Reusable, you don’t need to give them up. Have it scanned and take it back.
3.      RR –  Register Rewards
a.      What is a Register Reward?
A RR is a Catalina coupon that prints out of a separate machine after check out. It is a MC and is “$ off your next purchase” that you can use like cash on a future purchase.
b.      How do I earn a RR?
Walgreen’s has weekly and monthly RR promotions. When you purchase a qualifying item from the ad you earn a RR. For example: in the weekly ad it states “Buy 1 Aussie Hair Care Product for $2.99 and get a $2.00 RR”. Buy one Aussie Shampoo and a $2.00 RR will print out after check out. You can use this $2.00 RR on a future purchase.
c.       If I buy multiples of the same promotional items in one transaction, will multiple RR print?
No.  Using the example above, if you buy 3 Aussie Hair Care Products in the same transaction only 1 $2.00 RR will print.  If you want multiple RR you will have to do 3 separate transactions.  (note: some store managers will put a limit as to how many transactions and RR participating items you can buy in a day.)
d.      Can I do multiple RR promotions in the same transaction and get the multiple RR?
Yes!  For example: in the weekly ad it states “Buy 1 Ricola Mixed Berry Cough Drops 19ct for $1 and get a $1 RR”, (essentially making them Free after RR!). You can buy 1 Aussie and 1 bag of Ricola and get back a $2 RR and a $1 RR!
e.       Can I “Roll” RR’s into the same promotion?
If you do, a new RR WILL NOT print. For example: you do 2 separate transactions with the Aussie Hair care. The first transaction you buy 1 and a $2 RR prints.  The second transaction you buy another Aussie Hair Care and pay for it with the $2 RR from the 1st transaction. A RR will not print out in the second transaction. However you can use a RR that you got from a different promotion to pay for it and a new $2 RR will print.
f.       Can I use coupons on the RR items?
Yes!!! There has been a couple times when a RR that I expected didn’t print out and the cashier told me it was because I used a coupon. This is NOT true! You can use a MC, in-ad coupons, and IVC’s and you should still get a RR. If you don’t, make sure you got the exact item for the promotion, if you didn’t you can always return the product. Use a coupon to lower your out of pocket and still receive the RR. For example: Use a $1/1 MC on the Aussie Hair care and pay $1.99 and still get back a $2 RR. Use a $.50/1 IVC from the Healthy Savings Coupon Booklet for the Ricola and pay $.50 and get back a $1 RR!!  On a regular basis Walgreen’s will advertise things that are FREE after RR. What makes it better is when you use a coupon and get paid to take it off the shelf!
g.      If a RR promotion states “Buy $10 worth of these participating products and get a $5 RR” is the $10 before or after coupons are used?
Before!! Make sure the regular or sale price equals, or is more than the $10. Then use coupons lowering your OOP and still get the $5 RR.
h.      How do I use a RR?
A RR is $ off your next purchase and can be used like cash, but it is also considered a MC. The way that the Walgreen’s computer system is set up is that you can’t have more MC’s than you do products. (Store coupons do not apply to this rule) Let’s say you bought 2 packages of Huggies Diapers and wanted to use 2 MC and a $5 RR from a previous shopping trip. If this is all you bought then the RR will ‘beep’ and not go through. The RR needs something to ‘attach’ itself too.  In this case buy a small filler item like a piece of candy or pencil. Also you can’t be in the negative. If your total is $5 you can’t use a $6 RR.
i.        Do RR’s expire?
Yes. They usually expire within 2 weeks of the date you got them. I like to use my RR from one week to pay for the RR items the next so I always have RR’s to use. This is how I keep my OOP so low. However if they are about to expire, and there isn’t anything I want or need that produces a RR, I will ‘dump’ them on things I do need like diapers. This just means when I start collecting RR again I’ll pay more OOP the first transaction.

What is the best way to hand over my coupons?
To allow yourself any possible ‘overage’ and to avoid ‘beeping’ at the register hand your coupons over in this order: MC, then store coupons, then RR’s. For example: Playtex gloves are regularly priced $2.39 but there is an In-Ad coupon making them $.99. The Gloves ring up for $2.39, I hand over my $1/1 MC first making them $1.39 then I hand over the store coupon and the computer takes off $1.40 giving me $.01 overage. If I handed over the store coupon first the total would be $.99 then when I try to use the $1/1 MC it will ‘beep’ because of the overage. I have found that things go more smoothly when I hand my coupons over in this order.

Does Walgreens have an official Coupon Policy?        Yes, you can view it on-line here: http://www.walgreens.com/topic/help/generalhelp/coupon_policy_main.jsp?_requestid=37856

Here’s an example of my transactions one week.

1 Playtex Tampons - $7.49 each
used 1 $2/1 MC
1 Herbal Essence shampoo - $3 each

Used $5 RR from Transaction 1 (this attached to the Kraft since I didn’t use MC with it)
Total - $3.18 plus tax
Earned a $3 RR for Playtex and $1 RR for Herbal Essence (I earned more in RR than I paid OOP!)

Transaction 3

1 bag Huggies Slip-Ons - $9.49
            used $3/1 MC
1 Revlon Nail polish - $3.99 each

Transaction 5

Yet I got: 1 pack Huggies Slip-ons, 5 Sure Deodorant, 2 Revlon nail polish, 1 Playtex Tampons, 1 Keri Lotion, 4 Hunt’s Tomato sauce, 2 Herbal Essence Shampoos, 1 Kraft Mac n Cheese and 2 boxes of envelopes ALL for about the same cost as two of the items at regular price. Like paying $0.51 for each of the 19 items (including diapers and tampons)!
